What Are the Legal Requirements for Backflow Testing?
Federal and Ohio state laws require that all backflow prevention devices be tested annually by a certified backflow tester. These regulations help prevent contaminants, pesticides, and chemicals from entering the drinking water supply.
If your backflow device is not tested, local authorities may shut off your water supply. Each device has a unique serial number for tracking, and all testing and repairs must be completed by the property owner.
At The Waterworks, we make the process easy and hassle-free by handling:
- Certified backflow testing
- Official documentation & compliance reporting
- Backflow device repairs and replacements (if needed)
We provide same-day testing and repairs, so you can stay compliant and keep your water safe. Â
Why Is Backflow Testing Important?
Backflow prevention devices protect public and private water supplies from contamination caused by:
- Pesticides & Fertilizers from irrigation systems
- Chemicals & Industrial Waste from businesses and manufacturing facilities
- Sewage & Wastewater from damaged plumbing lines
- Fire Suppression Systems that can allow stagnant water to enter drinking supplies
Benefits of Annual Backflow Testing
- Protects your home or business from water contamination
- Prevents serious health risks from chemicals & bacteria
- Ensures compliance with Ohio state and federal regulations
- Avoids costly fines or water shutoffs
If you have a sprinkler system, irrigation system, or fire suppression system, backflow testing is required to prevent contaminants from entering the municipal water supply.
What Is Backflow & How Does It Happen?
Backflow occurs when water flows in the opposite direction than intended, allowing contaminants to enter the clean water supply. This typically happens when there is:
- A sudden drop in water pressure (such as a water main break or high demand)
- Cross-connections between potable and non-potable water sources
- Improperly installed backflow preventers
A properly installed backflow preventer acts as a barrier, stopping pesticides, chemicals, and waste materials from contaminating your water supply.  Â
What Happens During a Backflow Test?
During a backflow test, The Waterworks’ certified technicians will:
- Shut off the water supply to inspect the backflow prevention device.
- Check test cocks and shutoff valves to ensure proper function.
- Use specialized pressure gauges to measure differential pressure readings.
- Identify leaks, pressure issues, or faulty components.
If any issues are detected, our team can immediately perform the necessary repairs—saving you time and money.
Unlike some companies that only certify devices, The Waterworks provides both testing and repair services in a single visit. Â

They have done a lot of work for me over the years. They don’t replace things that don’t need replacing. They give a fair price and do great work
JonLe Heating and Air Conditioning serviced my furnace. I could not have been happier that the problem was relatively minor. They were professional fast and reliable. I will use them from now on. Its hard to trust any company but I feel I have found a reliable source for my needs.
JonLe installed a whole house humidifier. They were responsive, answered all my questions, and the customer service was excellent. Technicians showed up on time, were professional, and cleaned up after themselves. I even purchased their maintenance plan. Great company and I’m happy to give them my business going forward.
John the technician was courteous, knowledgeable, and efficient! I have used Waterworks in the past and would highly recommend this company for any of your plumbing needs !
Great service ! Tech did a amazing ing job and cleaned up the job site when he was done. We really appreciate your guys expertise. Thank you.
Called JonLe to fix furnace. Thermostat was calling for heat and fan was running, but no combustion. Technician arrived within 2 hr and identified problem as the inducer motor not working. It had seized. He was able to manually get it turning again and lubricated it to get it running. He recommended ordering a replacement because it would likely fail again. I agreed and he returned next day to install the new one. Furnace is working great. Have used JonLe for 20 yr as they installed the furnace when we built our house. Very satisfied with their service plan on my furnace and air conditioner. Happy to recommend them.
Very responsive, on-time and kept us informed throughout entire process.
We have a maintenance plan with the same technician for our home and a condo. They are efficient and easy to schedule.
The technician seemed very thorough, explaining everything he checked. He showed pictures of the unit and what he checked and mentioned things to look for. My husband was impressed with his work ethic.
Called at 9am because furnace was not working properly. They had it fixed and running within 5 hours of my phone call. Reasonable price. Great service.
They called before the appointment to confirm which is awesome! Efficient, clean, and professional.
Cory did an excellent job maintaining our heat pump and humidifier.
Very good company with good people trying to do the right things for their customers.
Extremely kind and quick emergency service. I really appreciate the service on a Sunday after a big snow storm! The extra effort they went to in sending me a bio and picture of my technician really solidified the quality service and my comfort level during a time of high anxiety.
Jonle was responsive to our emergency situation. Service tech was thorough and took all steps necessary to solve the problem.
We have been using Jonle for 20+ years. Technician (Mark Johnston) performed our annual furnace maintenance this past week. He was on time, courteous and thorough. Once complete, Mark showed us pictures of the inside of our furnace and explained the services he performed, including changing the filter (I provided) and the humidifier pad. Overall we were pleased as always.
Service Technician Tim Feldman does a great job in maintaining the equipment. Always friendly and has good answers for any question. Maintenance contract went up 18% in 2025.
Todd was great to work with. He was really straightforward about the options we had and what would be the best deal.
Anthony was very knowledgeable about my issue. Highly recommend this company for plumbing issues.
We had a great experience with Travis, the Waterworks drain tech that cleared my septic tank clog. My first call to the main number resulted in getting emergency service scheduled, I was texted technician's information and ETA, and the work was done quickly and professionally. Travis made several good proactive recommendations on which I will certainly follow up. I did pay an Overtime charge but it could have been worst overall.
I have had our furnace/heat pump check-ups and service done by JonLe (merged with Tri-County) for over 20 years and counting. From the HVAC installers (2/3 units replaced over these years). I have my summer and winter services BOTH done annually, using your Annual Service Agreement. Many of my services have been performed by Technical Engineer Steve and he has "ALWAYS" done professional jobs. He's great at trouble shooting, explaining and a "GREAT ASSET" to the JonLe Company; great skilled professional people with people skills is always a plus for any Company. I have recommended JonLe to family and friends that have also had great experiences. From Dave, Dennis, etc who installed my latest HVAC unit in recent years unit to Steve you have quality experienced staff. Again, Steve is a GREAT asset to your Company and one reason, I have continued service with JonLe; and recommended your Company to family and friends. Other HVAC services constantly are trying to expand their business with less expensive deals, etc. but I have remained a satisfied loyal customer; feel very comfortable that our HVAC system is always in top condition. I do wish everyone at JonLe a GREAT end of year Holiday's too; stay safe and well!
This company has helped me both with my business and home needs. They've always been prompt, respectful and done a great job. I also find that their prices are quite fair. Highly recommend them!
Professional and their work, courtesy. They live up to their name. I got small plumbing done.
I live in a neighborhood that has mature trees and the roots of those trees keep plugging up my sewer lines. Waterworks comes out every year to clear the sewer lines and they always do a great job and are very professional.
Everything is great! The desired results were accomplished. I can't take a picture of the inside of my pipi ,but the water seems to flow freely now. What more could I ask for?
We have the maintenance plan for our furnace and AC with Watereorks (which used to be Hetter) for the last 10 years . There staff are extremely professional, courteous and technically competent.. very happy with their services and highly recommend them .
I have used JonLe Heating and Cooling for a number of years at me previous residence and now at my current location. They have always given us the highest quality service and professionalism from installation of a entire hvac system to yearly maintenance. I have always highley recommended them to friends and family.
We called Jonle because our furnace was not producing much heat. A technician came by the same afternoon and fixed the problem. He was professional, courteous and extremely knowledgeable. He took the time to explain the problem to us and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend! Good folks!
