Getting the most out of your air conditioner

Most of us in Columbus have been experiencing a respite from using our air conditioners. The days have been surprisingly mild – sunny and breezy with low humidity – and the nights have been cool and comfortable. However, it is still August in Central Ohio, and the heat and humidity will return. During the hot, humid weather, here are some things you can do to get the most out of your air conditioner.

Use your ceiling fans in tandem with your air conditioner

Your air conditioner and ceiling fans work best when used together. Make sure your ceiling fan blades are set to turn in the correct direction for the season – typically this is counter clockwise to push the air downward.

Don’t neglect routine maintenance

The most costly air conditioning repairs can often be prevented by having your air conditioner tuned up every year in the spring.

Keep all the vents and interior doors in your home open

If you close the vents in unused rooms and shut the doors to those rooms, your air conditioner won’t run as efficiently. Keeping all the vents and interior doors in your home open improves the air flow in your home.

Keep exterior doors and windows closed

Make sure all doors and windows to the outside are shut securely. Leaving them open forces your air conditioner to work overtime to remove the heat and humidity from your home.

Set the thermostat and leave it alone

Set the thermostat to a temperature that you are comfortable and leave it there. Don’t be tempted to come home on a hot day and turn the thermostat way down. You’ll just waste energy.
