According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. Homeowners can prevent accidents, injury and damage by conducting a simple electrical safety audit every year or so. Here are five quick and easy things to check to protect your family
Check all electrical cords
Make sure none of your electrical cords are damaged. Look for any frayed or cracked cords and replace them.
Make sure your electrical cords can’t be stepped on
Make sure your electrical cords are out of the way of foot traffic. Also check to make sure that furniture isn’t resting on any of the cords.
Cover all electrical outlets
Cover your electrical outlets, especially if you have children.
Check all kitchen appliances
Most kitchen fires are caused by unattended equipment. Make sure all kitchen appliances are unplugged when not in use. Keep all appliance cords away from hot surfaces.
Examine lamps and light fixtures
Check all lamps and light fixtures to make sure the bulbs are the appropriate wattage for the fixture.
