4 Common Culprits of A Clogged Shower Drain

Published On: May 20, 2022Categories: Advice and tips

A clogged shower drain can be a big nuisance, but luckily this problem can be avoided if you make sure harmful items do not make their way down your drain. Some of the main culprits of clogged drains may surprise you. We’ve put together a list of the four most common culprits to help you avoid a clogged drain in the future.

Hair and Dead Skin Cells

Most people understand that you naturally lose hundreds of strands of hair nearly every time you shower. You may not realize that you also lose millions of dead skin cells each time you bathe as well. Both hair and dead skin cells can end up sticking to the walls of your drain pipe and cause clogging and blocking of water flow. A clog from this culprit will most likely happen at one point or another, but placing a hair catcher on top of your drain is a great way to help prevent this problem.

Hard Water

Hard water contains mineral deposits such as magnesium and calcium that can be quite damaging to your shower drain. The solid materials in these elements can catch onto the drain walls. With the use of a water softener, you can convert hard water into soft water. Soft water is also better for your hair and will prevent your clothing from turning dull when going through the laundry machine.

Soap Buildup

The scum and buildup from your soap, shampoo, and conditioner can end up contributing to a clogged shower drain. A significant amount of buildup can lead to your shower draining much slower than it should and eventually water will begin to pool. Try pouring a few buckets of warm water with chlorine bleach down your drain every few weeks to prevent this issue from occurring.

Trash and Debris

You may be surprised to learn that small items like shampoo bottle caps, razors, and other small items commonly make their way down shower drains and can cause big problems. Always be cautious when showering or when cleaning your shower to not allow these items to make their way down your drain.
