O-H: A Place To Discover

Find It Here. This is the new tag line from our friends at TourismOhio. As we head into July, we may be looking for one more summer adventure. However, many families are in the midst of traveling baseball teams and other projects, and find it challenging to get away on a vacation. Guess what? Our lovely state is packed full of fun things to do at every corner and is a short day trip away to making memories with your family.

Many of us may admit that we have lived right here in central Ohio and have never been to the Hocking Hills, Amish country or the ever popular, Yellow Springs. Even Hollywood actor Matthew Mcconaughey surprised staffers in May with a visit to the Hocking Hills to hike and do some zip lining! Alright, alright, alright! The Hocking Hills, located in southeastern Ohio, is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the country. From off-road segue tours to horseback riding to canoeing; there is an endless bounty of activities to keep someone engaged, active and charmed by nature. You can rent a cabin or just drive down for a day. It is a little under an hour from Columbus, two hours from Cincinnati and three from Cleveland. The Hocking Hills Winery continues to be a must-stop destination.

Horse-drawn carriages, expertly designed wood furniture and delicious cheese can only come from one place: Amish country. A step back in time, Amish country is a place to relax, enjoy and linger. The Barn Inn Bed & Breakfast is a perfect place to stay for a weekend and furniture shop at Homestead Furniture. The artisans there will make custom pieces to your liking, which range from kitchen tables to children’s furniture. If you are thinking about a great girls’ weekend or a romantic getaway, make The Inn at Honey Run your destination. It is a luxurious, adults-only retreat in the heart of Amish country, featuring an Open Air Art Museum, fine dining at Tarragon and over twelve beehives! Yes, you can even become a beekeeper and take home honey from the gift shop.

Another place on our list to visit is Yellow Springs, Ohio. Home to Antioch College as well as many art galleries, shops and just small town goodness, Yellow Springs is the perfect place to transform into a bohemian way of life. Bring your bike and pedal through the trails or wind your way around Xenia Avenue for a local shopping experience like no other. For an educational, one-of-a-kind experience, visit the Glen Helen’s Raptor Center, which rehabilitates and nurtures hundreds of species of birds each year and releases them back into the wild.

Head to Frosty’s, the Round House or the winery on Put-in-Bay Island in Port Clinton. Ride your way into amusement park heaven at Kings Island or Cedar Point or tour the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. You might run into King James himself!
