Cleaning stainless steel appliances

It’s no wonder that stainless steel is the most popular finish for kitchen appliances today. Stainless steel looks sleek, shiny, and clean, giving even the most outdated kitchens a modern look. No matter how beautiful it looks, stainless steel shows everything. Every water stain and fingerprint is instantly visible on stainless steel. Here are some handy tips for cleaning your stainless steel appliances and keeping them looking shiny and new.

Gather your cleaning supplies

Although there are plenty of cleaners on the market made specifically for stainless steel, you can use common household products to clean your stainless steel and achieve beautiful results.
Here’s what we recommend:

  1. – A few soft, lint-free, non-abrasive cleaning rags
  2. Dish soap – any dish soap will do, but we think Dawn does the best job
  3. Mineral oil or baby oil

Go with the grain

Just like wood, stainless steel has a grain to it. If you examine your stainless steel appliances, you’ll see slight striations that go in one direction. For the best results, it’s always best to clean in the direction of the grain.

Getting down to business – cleaning your stainless steel

  1. Apply a small amount of dish soap to your cleaning rag and rinse it with a small amount of water – just enough to make your rag damp.
  2. Wipe along the grain of your appliance.
  3. When you’ve finished cleaning the entire area, use a dry rag to wipe down the area.

Polishing stainless steel

Here’s where the baby oil or mineral oil comes into play.

  1. Apply a couple of drops of baby oil or mineral to a clean, dry rag.
  2. Wipe along the grain of your appliance.
  3. Use a dry section of the rag to lightly buff any additional residue left from the oil.

Finally, stand back and admire your results.
