Cold weather is on its way and now is a great time to winterize your irrigation system. Here’s how to prepare your sprinkler system in four easy steps.

  1. Locate the main shutoff valve and shut off the water supply to your irrigation system.
  2. If you have an automatic irrigation system, shut down the timer. If you don’t want to lose the programming information, set the timer to “Rain” mode. An alternative is to shut off the power to the timer, but you will need to reprogram your system next spring.
  3. Drain your pipes, using the drain valve (these can be manual or automatic).
  4. Insulate the shutoff valve, all above-ground piping, and backflow preventers and valves that are above the ground. You can use foam insulation tape or foam insulating tubes that can be purchased at any hardware store.
